The Health Benefits of Becoming a Vegetarian-Vegan

Health, especially in this day in age is at the forefront of every dietary topic. From fat, to saturated fat, to cholesterol, to topics of inhumane handling of farm animals. Becoming a vegetarian or vegan is a very good choice if you are dealing with one or more of the above topics. I switched over to become a vegetarian as a new years resolution. Not to prove anything but, just to see if I felt any different. I must say that being a very big meat eater all of my life for 38+ years, it wasn’t going to be an easy task. I loved meat, beef, pork, chicken, fish and everything that was once living and breathing for that matter. To tell you the trust? I didn’t feel bad at all. I was in great shape, very little body fat and had zero health problems. I just wanted to see what all the hype was about.

Well, it is now half way through March and I haven’t touched any meat. Have I lost weight? No, I had no fat to lose, did my cholesterol go down? Nope, it”s the same. So what is different about me? I am never overly full and I never have the overly full feel. I do notice I have more energy, my hair and nails seem to be more healthy and just my over all “light on my feel” feeling is tangible. Becoming a vegetarian or vegan does have some quick benefits. I thought I was going to have to wait months before feeling different. (and not all people will notice a difference.)

Out of all the years I have spent making New Years Resolutions, I have finally found one that lasted more than 4 days. Being a vegetarian was far easier than I thought. Quitting meat is not like quitting smoking, there is no drug that you are giving up, it is just the “love for” that you have to get over. It only took me a week to get into the full swing. One of the best benefits that I have seen of becoming a vegetarian is in the wallet. The money I save on my grocery bill is quite large now that I am not buying steaks, burgers, pork shops/roasts and such. In closing I will say that if you ever had the urge to become a vegetarian, it isn’t all that hard to become and stick with it. Take it from me. Steak was my life! – M.Cody
