Root Chakra
Anyone who has started a spiritual journey, especially if you include meditation as part of your practice, can use the ancient knowledge of Chakras to improve your health and well-being. First discussed in the Upanishads, many eastern religions recognize the chakras as force centers on the human body as well as the etheric body.
A chakra, simply put, is an energy vortex. It is commonly accepted that there are seven (7) main chakras in the human body. (There actually are others, but we will focus on the first seven for this series.) The seven chakras are: Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third-Eye, Crown and each one is associated with a part of the body, a color and a sound.

* Understand the Root Chakra:
- Location: The root chakra is located between the genitals and the anus. You sit on it. You can also think of it as being the base of the spine.
- Color: The color of the Root chakra is RED. This begins the rainbow of the chakra colors. It is pictured as a bright red four-petaled lotus.
- Element: Earth
- Sense: Smell
- Attitude: The Root chakra governs your primal feelings. Safety and security, fight or flight, survival instincts are all first chakra issues. Sexuality, lust and obsession are also ruled by the root chakra. If you are fearful and anxious or obsessed with security or sexual desire, then your root chakra may need to be opened or cleaned.
- Sound: LAM (laaahmng)
- Open the Root chakra by placing the tip of your index finger on each hand to the tip of the thumb. Focus your attention on the chakra (where you sit). Chant the sound LAM.
- If you know how to do Kegel exercises, these are excellent for strengthening and opening the Root chakra. Any physical movement or labor is appropriate for the first chakra.
- Meditation: Sit on the floor if you can. Better yet, sit directly on the ground. Focus your attention on the point at which your body makes contact with the earth. Clear your mind and let the color red fill it. Now allow yourself to feel the LOVE that the Earth feels for all Its children. Let the Love flow upwards from the ground into your body through your Root chakra.
